This is why Joel is usually the favorite member of BJM. If it was Anton’s idea to have him front and center, that was a brilliant move. Joel’s personality, style, and on stage presence draws people in. If you go through any comment section on a BJM video, most comment their love for this guy.

Interesting how many people love this record. I remember what I learned from John Coates, English professor at the University of Göttingen and jazz guitarist, during one of his lectures on the history of jazz. He claimed that Jelly Roll Morton used this song as an example of how NOT to play jazz.🙂 Two thirds of the record, he said, present a parodic, very sweet version of "Someday Sweetheart", with violins and all; only at the end (starting at 2:19), Morton reveals a bit what you really can do with it on the piano, and then at 2:52 his band finally lets loose. The tempo speeds up, everybody group-improvises, George Mitchell delivers a brilliant cornet solo, and the song becomes actual jazz. That they could have played like this throughout is clear when you listen to the "Original Jelly-Roll Blues", which they recorded on the same day. As much as I love Omer Simeon's bass clarinet solo, I always felt Coates had a point.
